Archaeological and historical assessment of Brackenridge Park, City of San Antonio, Texas

During the last weeks of December 1976, an archaeological and historical survey was conducted within the boundaries of Brackenridge Park, San Antonio, Texas, to inventory and assess all identifiable prehistoric and historic remains. This survey resulted from a contract between the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), and the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the preparation of a master plan for future park development. The master plan is currently being prepared by the firm of CGR Associates of San Antonio. Dr. Thomas R. Hester, Director of CAR, served as principal investigator for the project, and the work was coordinated by Jack Eaton, Associate Director. The report describes the various activities of these surveys and details the results of both field surveys and laboratory and library/archival research. Each prehistoric and historic site is described, including location, physical description of structure(s), date and function. Brackenridge Park is a City-owned facility, located approximately one mile north of downtown San Antonio. The park is bounded by Broadway and Hildebrand Avenues and the McAllister Expressway.
