Abstract

This ethnographic study sought to understand the relationship between addiction and masculinity in rural Central Texas. Using methods such as participant observation, interviewing, local media analysis I examine how the lived experience of addiction impacts definitions of masculinity, the interaction between recovery instructions and identity, and how men navigate through family obligations in the context of poverty and addiction. Through participant-generated data, I argue that masculinity hinges on the financial responsibly of self and family.
