Abstract

This document is a compilation of research documents dedicated to the musical works that have been performed during my qualifying graduate recital. Four basic topics are addressed within the various chapters: Biographical Information, Sociocultural/Historical Background, Theoretical Analysis, and Performance Practice. Information for each chapter was gathered through score study, reference books, periodicals, dissertations, and musical recordings. The first chapter addresses the evolution of the Baroque solo motet with a specific discussion of the solo motets of Antonio Vivaldi. The second chapter addresses the life, influences, and works of Joseph Canteloube. The third chapter analyzes three piece by Hugo Wolf revolving around three different female characters. The final chapter examines and compares three separate performances of the aria "Se come voi," from Giacomo Puccini's opera Le Villi.
