The purpose of writing a recital document is to facilitate the technical and expressive singing that will be presented in the recital by examining history, poetry, and theoretical constructs which pertain to the music. In my first chapter, I discuss the societal implications of madness on the music of Henry Purcell. I do this by examining the history of Bethlem Hospital, musical conventions of madness, and providing a discussion of frame. In my second chapter, I give a brief overview of the life of Ernest Chausson and discuss characteristics of Chanson Perpétuelle that are distinctly evidential of Chausson’s mature song writing style. In my third chapter, I support the idea of Richard Strauss’s unified opus 27 with a brief account of his life, an overview of each song, dissection of their stylistic traits, and a discussion of each song’s place within the intertwined narratives of the Strauss’s relationship and the chronology of the opus. In my final chapter, I illustrate how the music of Puccini’s Donde lieta informs the characterization of Mimì. I present cadential evasions, quick succession of key areas, and the harmonization of Mimì’s theme, as tools for examining her character through the lens of feminine power.
