Priming Bilateral Transfer: The Influence of Motor Priming During a Ball Tossing Task
The present study examined whether action-effect priming can also influence the performance of the untrained limb via bilateral transfer. The study examined participants' (n = 29) toss performance through an underhand ball toss task. The study consisted of a warm up phase, training phase and a test phase. In the warmup phase, the participants tossed the ball in order to become familiar with the tossing task. Following the warm up phase, the training phase involved participants tossing the ball with their dominant hand to two targets (near and far target). After each toss, if the ball landed within the designated success zone, indicating a successful toss, an auditory feedback tone would be played immediately. Each target had an associated auditory tone associated with it. Finally, the test phase included the ball toss task under two conditions. During the priming test condition, participants were asked to toss using their untrained, non-dominant hand. Participants were prompted to toss to the respective target by hearing the auditory tone that was associated with each target. During the control condition, participants were again tossing with their non-dominant, untrained hand, however they were prompted to toss to the respective targets by hearing a verbal prompt as opposed to the tones. Results indicated and increase in tossing accuracy for those classified as successful learners to the long target when they were primed with the associated auditory feedback.
