Abstract

When preparing for a recital, critical attention to detail is vital. This includes having a clear understanding of historical backgrounds, theoretical elements, cultural traditions, and performance practice. In this document, I explore how I have chosen to incorporate these elements in the preparation of my graduate recital. In the first chapter, I describe how the genre género chico influenced the zarzuela theatre and empowered the Spanish people. Chapter Two contains a theoretical analysis of John Kander’s “A Letter from Sullivan Ballou” and Chapter Three discusses how culture and language influenced the writing styles of Alexander Grechaninov. Finally, the fourth chapter focuses on different productions of the Puccini’s opera La bohème and how various artistic interpretations influenced my performance of Act 1, Scene 2.
