In event-based PM tasks, an action is to be performed when a particular stimulus is present in the future. The current experiment focuses on the magnitude of cost in event-based PM when context is taken into account. Familiar contexts, which are common outside the laboratory (e.g. the route home from work), allow one to anticipate a target event (e.g. the grocery store). In laboratory event-based tasks, participants usually cannot anticipate exactly when a target event will occur during the ongoing task. Results from this experiment suggest that the ability to anticipate target events reduces cost to the ongoing task.
