Abstract

This qualitative study was conducted in the summer and fall of 2010. The study sought to detail how domestic workers in Laredo, Texas and San Antonio, Texas utilize their earnings. Current studies focusing on domestic workers are localized, as in only one city, and not comparative. Therefore, two cities within a 150 mile radius of each other and the border were chosen. The participants were asked a set of questions and interviews were recorded. The main finding showed that domestic workers mainly utilized their earnings on living expenses such as rent and utilities. Other key findings were that domestic workers overall had an amicable relationship with their employer, only remitted money to nuclear family members and in cases of emergencies, placed great importance on the education of their children, and displayed social and residential mobility since arriving to the United States.
