Abstract

The following document is designed to accompany and support the graduate conducting recital given in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting. The first portion of the recital took place on Sunday, April 3, 2011, at the San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, TX. The second portion was held on May 13, 2012, at the University of Texas, San Antonio. The recital consisted of the following works: Octet, Op. 103 by Ludwig von Beethoven, Overture for Band, Op. 24 by Felix Mendelssohn, Country Band March by Charles Ives, First Suite in E-Flat by Gustav Holst, Sonatina by Malcolm Arnold, Strange Humours by John Mackey, An American Elegy by Frank Ticheli, and Slava! by Leonard Bernstein. The first portion introduces the primary subject matter and presents a justification of the chosen material as appropriate literature for scholarly research. Each subsequent chapter deals with the individual pieces on the program and a variety of aspects pertaining to each, in order to present a comprehensive understanding within the range of subjects inherent within the field of music. The document concludes with a summary of the primary theme. A recording of this program is available from the John Peace Media Library at The University of Texas, San Antonio.
