Abstract

Stumbling, my memoir about my developmental years in undergraduate school and my struggles with mental health, is a book unlike any other that I have read. All its components—the writing on depression and on the healing power of nature; the use of humor and photography; my particular stance on truth in nonfiction; the use of fragments, poetic verse, and lineation; and the scenes reflecting on writing—blend together many traditional elements of memoir, but Stumbling also stands out as an idiosyncratic example of a memoir about mental health. By writing my book, I was able to reflect on my difficult past with depression and to ponder the lessons I have learned. I offer this book to anyone who is struggling so that my story will make them feel less alone.
