Abstract

Ada Calhoun (2021), in her best-selling book focused on middle-aged Generation X women's experiences entitled Why We Can't Sleep at Night, identified the conflicting roles and complexities that many Generation X women encounter. Statistics from the State of Texas show a large portion of female Generation X licensed professional counselors who work in the state. Empirical research on this population is sparse. This qualitative study aimed to understand the lived experience of Generation X women who enter mental health counseling as a second career and what motivates them to move into the counseling field. Relational and controlling images taken from Relational Cultural Theory were explored. Implications for counselor education and counseling practice are discussed.
