Abstract

Improving students' number sense can have a positive impact in the classroom. Not only can numeracy improve the level of competency of students, but the increase in numeracy can also influence positively the attitude towards mathematics in the classroom. In working in two different school districts with incomparable student populations, I have become aware of a trend. From regular classes to the AP classes, students who are proficient with computation seem to perform better overall and have a better attitude towards the class, along with more self-efficacy. After an intervention to improve students' proficiency on basic calculations such as adding and subtracting fractions, multiplying larger numbers, working with decimals, and many more, students' number sense improved, as well as their self-efficacy.
